«We lost the referendum. That does not mean Alberta’s independence movement has lost its voice—or its future.
In this episode of Frankly Speaking, I reflect on the October 19 Alberta referendum, Danielle Smith’s response and what comes next for independence-minded Albertans.
My argument is simple: the next step is not panic, infighting or giving up. It is turning support into representation.
I discuss whether independence organizations could work together, support credible candidates under one banner and build a voice in the Alberta Legislature. Could that representation eventually give the movement influence over government policy—or even the balance of power?
I also challenge the idea that voters must support the UCP out of fear of the NDP. Danielle Smith’s approach to independence supporters raises a bigger question: does the party leadership serve its members, or expect its members to surrender their convictions?
There are no guaranteed outcomes. But there is a choice about how we respond to defeat.
The movement does not have to become one organization. It does need to find a way to work together, put forward credible people and keep its ideas in the conversation.
Could losing this referendum become the beginning of a different political path for Alberta independence?
Watch, share and tell me what you believe the next step should be.
