Video | Alberta Independence Update: Referendum Question Refiled + First Nations Treaty Rights by Keith Wilson K.C. | Constitutional Lawyer

By Keith Wilson K.C. | Constitutional Lawyer

"The Alberta government has introduced Bill 14, amending the Citizens Initiative Act and removing provisions that complicated the independence petition process. That matters, because it restores a more direct and democratic route for Albertans to have their say.

In this video, I break down what Bill 14 changes, why it’s significant, and how it connects to the Alberta Prosperity Project’s decision to refile an independence petition question with legally reinforced wording that mirrors the Federal Clarity Act. With Bill 14 now in place, the petition process is back on track and moving toward a signature drive expected to launch in January.

I also address the growing claims that a petition or referendum threatens First Nations treaty rights. It doesn’t. A referendum is a democratic vote. If that vote succeeds, the law requires negotiations that include affected First Nations, and any separation agreement must recognize Aboriginal and treaty rights before constitutional changes can even proceed.

I also lay out the economic case: independence means the opportunity for lower taxes, greater prosperity, and a government that answers directly to Albertans.

This is the moment to get serious. The legal pathway is clearer than it has ever been, and the next phase will be decided by how many Albertans are willing to speak up, sign, and vote.

Talk to your family over the holidays. Have the respectful conversations. And be ready when the petition opens. "
