«Is Canada holding Alberta back—and could Alberta independence deliver more freedom, prosperity and control over your own life?
Professor Bruce Pardy joins Nadine Wellwood on Sovereign Voice to discuss Alberta independence, Danielle Smith, individual sovereignty and what kind of country Albertans could build.
Bruce’s argument is blunt: “The rest of Canada is dragging it down.”
But his warning goes further: leaving Canada will not make Albertans free if they simply replace Ottawa’s control with Edmonton’s.
Bruce explains his proposal to “flip the default”—giving government only specifically defined powers rather than broad authority over people’s lives. Nadine challenges him on what that would mean for property rights, courts, businesses, healthcare, education and the practical transition to independence.
They also debate whether Alberta should keep the Crown, how to prevent politicians and bureaucracies from accumulating power, and whether a constitution can genuinely protect individual freedom.
The conversation closes with a critical question about Danielle Smith and the referendum: who would negotiate on Alberta’s behalf—and would those negotiations deliver independence or another compromise within Canada?
