"The petition drive by groups like the Alberta Prosperity Project is on track to succeed, likely forcing Premier Danielle Smith’s hand to include the clear independence question on the October 19, 2026, referendum ballot: “Do you agree that the Province of Alberta should cease to be a part of Canada to become an independent state?”
Yet Premier Smith’s plan to bundle this with a slate of nine or more other questions—on immigration control, social programs, voter ID, provincial appointment of superior court judges, Senate abolition, opting out of federal programs with funding intact, and prioritising provincial laws over conflicting federal ones—threatens to sabotage the very cause many of her supporters champion."
